STEAM READY TO TAKE ON THE LAKERS SATURDAY

The Aitkin Steam has had quite a season. They are currently 7-9 heading into the next round of the Region 9C playoffs this Saturday. They are just one win away from a coveted State Tournament berth. Next up is the Pierz Brewers on Saturday at 1:00pm in Opole. The two teams met back in June and the Brewers scored a 10-0 win over the Steam but this is a different Aitkin team now and they are playing just the kind of baseball that might turn around that loss and keep them moving along in the post-season. Jake McGuire has been a big part of the Steam offense this season after a stellar year for the Gobblers this past spring. Stats show he is hitting at a .424 clip while driving in 19 runs to lead the team. Zach Ehnstrom is batting .377 while scoring 11 runs, Nolan Dotzler is at .342 and Nathan Ehnstrom is at .333 while scoring 11 runs as well. He also is second in runs batted in with 14. Nathan has had a good year on the hill as well with a 4-2 record, 50 strikeouts and an E.R.A. of 1.93. Zach is next at 2-2, 25 strikeouts and E.R.A. of 3.02. But this team is just that, everyone has contributed during the season and especially in the past three weeks. They made the Region 9C tourney by beating the Freeport Black Sox in a best of three series, lost to the Pierz Lakers 6-4 and then beating the St. Wendel Saints 5-1. Three sets of brothers dot the roster including Nathan and Zach Ehnstrom, Jake and John McGuire and Hunter and Tanner Hills. Add Landon Janzen, Jake Ince, Thor Dunham, Carson Kullhem, Nolan Dotzler, Owen Foday, Logan Olson, John Pelarski, Drew Paulbeck, Tucker Holm and Mark Rohde and you've got the team that is poised to get to the next level. Good luck Steam!

steam beats St. Wendell, now one win from State!

The Aitkin Steam bounced back from an opening round loss to the Pierz Lakers to beat St. Wendell 5-1 Saturday to move one win from getting to the State Tournament. Nathan Ehnstrom pitched a complete game for the win, giving up just five hits and helping himself with a two-run single to give the Steam a 2-1 lead. Drew Paulbeck, Owen Foday and Tucker Holm all added runs batted in for the Steam. Jake McGuire added three hits for the winners. The win puts the Steam into a matchup with the Randall/Pierz Brewers winner next Saturday at 1:00pm. A victory there puts them into the State Tournament. The Aitkin Steam battled the #1 seeded Pierz Lakers to the end Friday night before coming out on the short end of a 6-4 game. The loss in the opening round of the Region 9C tourney puts the Steam into a 4:30 matchup Saturday in Pierz hoping to keep their season alive with a win.

steam opens region play in pierz saturday against the Lakers

The Aitkin Steam, the #8 seed will meet #1 Pierz Friday night in opening round play in the Region Tournament. Gametime is 6PM in Pierz against the Lakers. They will play Saturday as well. A win Friday puts them in the 7PM game while a loss has them playing at 4:30 with that game also in Pierz.

steam off to regional after series win over Freeport

The Aitkin Steam played a three-game series with the Freeport Black Sox last weekend with a trip to the playoffs at stake. The two team split a pair at Woock Field on Saturday forcing a deciding game three on Sunday.

The Aitkin Steam are heading for the Regional this week after winning game three of the series with Freeport Sunday afternoon 9-0 at Woock Field. Jake McGuire finished a four-run rally with a three-run homer over the left field fence in the 5th that moved the Steam lead from 4-0 to 7-0. It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the 4th when the Steam took a 3-0 lead. Zach Ehnstrom singled and Nolan Dotzler laid down a perfect bunt. Jake McGuire doubled to the gap in left to make it 2-0 and then after Drew Paulbeck reached on an error, the Steam executed a perfect steal of home for the third run. Aitkin scored four runs in the 5th but realistically they should have not scored any. Thor Dunham walked, and scored with two outs when a short pop-up between the pitcher and first baseman dropped and Dotzler was safe at first.
