lightning state tournament run ends with loss

The Northern Lakes Lightning did everything but put the puck in the net Thursday in their 4-1 Consolation round loss to Mankato West. The loss ends the season for the Lightning who finished 17-12-1. Northern Lakes outshot the Scarlets 30-24 but after falling behind 2-1 goalie Mason Schreiber stood tall in goal for the winners. Both teams played different goaltenders than they did in their losses Wednesday. The Lightning started senior Damon John and the Scarlets had Schreiber in the net. John played extremely well for Northern Lakes but his counterpart was just a little bit better as Mankato West moved to the Consolation title game Saturday against St. Cloud Cathedral.
The first period for the second straight game was scoreless, and the Lightning took a 1-0 lead in the second. Kyler Rikala scored at 7:12 on the power play, his 3rd goal of the season. The Scarlets responded just a couple minutes later as Keaton Dorzek tied the game with his 19th of the year. That goal was also a power play goal with Leyton Cable in the penalty box. The Lightning survived a penalty shot prior to the penalty and kept the lead until Dorzek scored. The Scarlets got the game winner late in the second as Grady Schmidt scored his 17th goal of the year at 16:28 assisted by Jakobe Tosch. They took that 2-1 lead into the third when they scored two more goals. Tosch got his 22nd at 12:47 and Rickey Enter picked up his 8th, an empty net goal ay 15:40.
Lightning      0  1 0 1
Scarlets        0 2 2 4
